PLAYER PROFILE: Sven-Goran Eriksson
- Biography
- Stats
Sven-Goran Eriksson is a manager with a distinguished record both at club and at international level. He is currently the Head Coach of the Ivory Coast national team.
At current, he is the only manager to have won the league and cup double in three different countries, a statistic that amplifies his unique and incomparable adaptability.
As a professional player in Sweden, major trophies appeared well beyond his reach, that is, until he tried his hand as a manager. Sven’s first major success as a head coach arrived fairly quickly after his move into management and whilst at Goteburg, he won the UEFA Cup. Thereafter, for more than two decades, wherever he went, success followed and trophies were grasped.
The success he started in Sweden immediately continued in his new position at Benfica where he won the league, the cup and ended as the runner-up in the UEFA Cup. He then moved to Roma, winning the Coppa Italia in 1986 – then to Benfica once again, becoming the runner-up in the European Cup Final in 1990 – then to Sampdoria, winning the Coppa Italia in 1994 – and to Lazio, where he became the club’s most successful manager ever leading them to the European Cup Winners Cup in 1999 and the Scudetto in 2000.
The continued success developed Sven’s reputation as an elite manager and consequently in 2001, Sven was appointed as the first foreign manager of the England national team. As England manager, Sven maintained a very good record and took England to 4th in the FIFA World Rankings – the highest England had been for decades.
In 2007, Sven took charge of Manchester City in the Premier League, his first English club. He took the club to their highest final club position in their history. He also became the first manager since 1970 to win both derby games, tactically out-doing, Alex Ferguson of Manchester United twice in that season.
In 2009, Sven took a brave and ultimately ambitious decision to become the Director of Football at Notts County, allured by the concept of taking England’s oldest league team from League Two to the Premier League. Even in the financial breakdown of the club in 2010, Sven was seen to coordinate his job with great respect and bowed out from his position with high regard – later leaving the door open for him to take over the job of the Ivory Coast national team – where he is currently planning for the World Cup.
