Born in Venezuela of basque origin, Fernando currently plays left-sided centre back for Athletic Bilbao.

 

At 6'4 Fernando is an imposing figure who is forging a reputation as a formidable no-nonsense defender that is also very comfortable on the ball.

 

He played for several Bilbao youth teams prior to making his debut for Athletic in 2005 and has made more than 130 appearances since.

 

Fernando played for Spain under 19's in the 2004 U19 European Champaionships and has since been called into the full national team squad although he is still to make his debut at senior international level. He is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in La Liga.

 

Fernando has played an integral role in Athletic Bilbao's successful 2009/10 season where they progressed well in the Europa Cup and have had a consistent Premeira campaign in La Liga and are in contention for a Champions League qualification spot.
