- Biography
Sean is currently manager of Doncaster Rovers FC in the Coca-Cola Championship, where he has developed a reputation of being a highly intelligent, innovative Coach whose teams consistently play attractive football.
A keen student of the game and astute tactician with exceptional man-management skills, Sean is able to get the very best out of his players individually and collectively. He is fast becoming one of the most highly regarded Coaches in England.
Prior to moving into management, Sean enjoyed a long playing career as a midfielder making almost 600 football league appearances whilst at Fulham and Bournemouth. His performances were also rewarded with 3 caps at senior international level for Republic of Ireland after having previously been involved in the Under-21 set-up.
Sean retired from playing in 1995. Over the next five years he went on to hold a number of roles at Bournemouth AFC ranging from community officer, physio and youth team manager before becoming the first-team manager in 2000. He went on to achieve impressive results at Bournemouth, despite limited funds at his disposal, achieving promotion from the Third Division via the play-offs.
In 2006, Sean moved from Bournemouth to become manager of Doncaster Rovers – where he would go on to make an immediate impact. In his first season, Sean managed to lead Rovers to Football League Trophy success at the Millennium Stadium. Then in the following season, his first full season in charge, he managed to steer Rovers from League One into the Coca-Cola Championship via the play-offs, beating Leeds United at Wembley.
Since that promotion in 2008, he has managed to ensure Rovers remain in the league, with them achieving an impressive 14th position in their first season.
The 2009/10 season has seen Rovers achieve their highest ever league position and come close to a play-off place, despite substantially limited resources compared to their Championship rivals.
Sean's quiet, assured persona and refreshingly honest approach in addition to the style of entertaining football his teams produce has seen a growing list of admirers and ISM are in no doubt that Sean will manage at the highest level.
